You’ve spent weeks or even months collecting paint swatches and holding them up against your walls to see what they look like at all hours of the day. Now, you’ve chosen the type and colors of paint. You’ve also hired some professional painters to paint the rooms in your home in those vibrant colors that you’ve chosen. How do you prepare your interior space for painting?
Remove Furniture and Other Obstacles
If it’s possible, take the furniture and other things that might get in the way of the painter. If you can’t get the furniture out of the room, you can put some drop cloths over it. While one of our painters will be happy to handle this part of the process for you, doing it yourself allows us to get the job started faster.
Take Off the Hardware
Consider removing hardware from the space being painted. This includes the light fixtures, doorknobs and their strike plates, clothes hooks, doorstops and electric switch plates. If you can remove window locks, do so. Organize the hardware in plastic bags and label it so it’s easy to keep track of where everything goes. You might also want to turn off the electricity to the room at the circuit box.
It’s also a good idea to roll up and remove any area rugs from the space before painters arrive. Our team will put drop cloths in place to protect your floors, but everything that you move out of the room helps.
Use the Vacuum
Vacuuming up as much dust as you can is also necessary before the job begins. If you or the painter have to sand some woodwork in the room, vacuum after the sanding is complete. Use a vacuum with an HEPA filter, which can pick up nearly microscopic particles of dust.
Patch Holes and Cracks, and Remove Mold and Mildew
Depending on the condition of your walls and ceiling, patching holes and cracks may be a job you’d leave to the painter. It may also take some time for the repair work to dry. You can usually remove mold and mildew with a sponge dipped in diluted chlorine bleach. If you do take on the patchwork or mildew-removing jobs yourself, make sure to wear gloves and safety goggles. Open doors and windows to get proper ventilation.
